who is jim?

Jim Hollington

My name is Jim and I work in and around the area of web development. I have spent the last 3 years committing myself to learning as much as I can about the ever evolving world of interactive design at The University of Wales, Newport. I graduated this year with a 2:1 in interactive media. My final major project was to create two flash games that can be deployed online and played by anyone. The games can be found here.

My high level of interest and eagerness to know more about what I do means I am always reading, watching, and experimenting with all things interactive. I take influences from many of the expected sources such as online journals and forums like SitePoint or the FWA but also from some more unusual sources like photography. Before I developed my interest in interactive design I took an A level in photography. This sparked my interest in mixing creativity and technology and since then I have prided myself in making things that are both technical and beautiful. Some of my photographs can be found on my flickr account here.

Before I went to university I had several paid freelance web design jobs which taught me a few things; one being that there most certainly is such a thing as too much green in a design, even if it is for a landscape gardener. More importantly though, was that I was only scratching the surface and if I wanted to get better I would have to start learning quickly.

During my time at university I greatly improved my theory and time management skills, not least because I was working for golf magazine GolfPunk as website manager and overall tech support at the same time as doing my final major project.

Now that I have finished my three years at university I feel I have developed many new ways of thinking and problem solving and I am using these new talents in my quest to become an informed and innovative web developer.
